Radiofrequency is a kind of electromagnetic radiation. It transfers energy in the form of radio waves. There are many kinds of electromagnetic radiation, with different frequencies (short or long waves). Radiofrequency is a low-energy, low-frequency radiation. When used for aesthetic treatments, radiofrequency produces an electrical current inside the skin. The current heats the deeper skin layer (dermis) at a controlled depth. The heat will cause a controlled damage in the skin that will trigger a healing response to rejuvenate the skin. The upper skin layer (epidermis) will be left unaffected. Radiofrequency is used to tighten the skin, reduce the appearance of wrinkles and to stimulate the formation of new collagen.
